Dr Nielsen is an experienced Orthopaedic Surgeon visiting the Mater Private and Greenslopes Private Hospital with special interest in the areas of Primary Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, Revision Hip and Knee Arthroplasty and Arthroscopic Knee Surgery including Knee Reconstructions.
Dr Nielsen graduated from the University of Queensland in 1983 with his primary medical degree. He completed his Orthopaedic specialty training in Brisbane before spending 2 years overseas undergoing advanced training in hip and knee arthroplasty including revision hip and knee surgery in Belfast NI, Exeter UK, Europe and USA. Upon completion of his trauma fellowships in Salzburg, Austria and Louisville KY, USA he accepted a position as Senior Lecturer in orthopaedic surgery based at Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in 1994 until 2001. He commenced full time private practice in 2001 and continues that practice today along with maintaining a public appointment at QEII hospital.
Stepping down from his role as State Chairperson of Australian Orthopaedic Association in 2018 he continues to study and has since completed his Graduate Certificate in Surgical Education through the University of Melbourne. Dr Nielsen attained the title of Associate Professor - School of Clinical Medicine for the University of Queensland in 2018 and also certified as an Independent Medical Examiner (CIME). He continues an active role as Queensland Lead in developing the AOA21 program for Australian Orthopaedic Trainees and has published several articles and lectured extensively both in Australia and overseas.
